Abstract: There’s no question that generative AI has impacted student writing. What if we moved beyond conversations about plagiarism and started to think about how generative AI could transform students’ writing process in ethical ways? In his book Co-Intelligence, Wharton professor Ethan Mollick describes cyborgs as people who integrate AI into every part of their workflow and centaurs as people who only use AI for certain tasks. In this presentation, you’ll learn more about how to integrate generative AI tools in writing instruction using the Open Education Resource Cyborgs and Centaurs, a first-year writing textbook that aims to provide students with prompts and examples of AI integration as they explore their personal writing process. You’ll learn how to promote AI literacy in students and teach them to evaluate and use these tools in responsible ways to augment, not replace, their own work. This approach helps students develop critical thinking skills while leveraging AI as a writing tool.
