Abstract:
Generative
AI is not just a tool—it is a mirror reflecting the strengths and
weaknesses of educational research itself. From shaping methodologies to
influencing data interpretation, AI challenges core research practices:
Does it enhance scholarly inquiry or erode critical thinking? Does it
expand access to knowledge or reinforce systemic biases? This session
explores AI’s impact through an educational research lens, examining its
role in theory-building, ethics, and methodological rigor. As
AI-generated knowledge reshapes academic work, we must ask: Is it
deepening our understanding of education, or merely changing how (and by
whom) knowledge is produced?
Presenter Bio:
Dr. Soroush Sabbaghan
is an Associate Professor at the Werklund School of Education,
University of Calgary focusing on the intersection of artificial
intelligence into education. His work focuses on exploring practical
applications of AI in both K-12 and higher education settings including
supporting personalized learning and effective curriculum development.
Soroush has actively engaged in academic discourse through published
research papers working closely with educational institutions and
policymakers. He is the editor of the forthcoming book, Navigating Generative AI in Higher Education: Ethical, Theoretical and Practical Perspectives,
which addresses emerging issues and opportunities in the use of
generative AI within academic environments. Through his research and
editorial work, Soroush is committed to advancing a meaningful and
responsible approach to technology in education.
